Background
Where the experience comes from.
Our founder, Toye Onikoyi, built submarine bridge trainers in collaboration with NUWC Newport in Rhode Island. That work is held to a high bar: a trainer is not finished when someone has clicked through it, it is finished when they can actually do the job.
That experience shapes both sides of Bubbler: guided career exploration for schools and programs, and workforce simulations organizations run with their own teams.
Why Rhode Island
Connected to the work around us.
- Defense and maritime
- Naval Station Newport, NUWC Newport, Electric Boat at Quonset, and the companies that supply them. The jobs we show students are being hired for a short drive from where they live.
- Ocean industries and offshore wind
- The first offshore wind farms in the country came online here. The people who will maintain them are being trained right now.
- Small enough to move
- Schools, workforce organizations, and employers are close enough to build programs together. That helps connect career exploration to the work happening in the region.
Origin
Where this started.
We started with The Bubbler VR, a virtual reality venue in Providence. We learned what people actually do inside a headset by watching thousands of them try it, and by seeing which ones took the headset off talking about a job instead of a game.
The venue is still open and still a separate business. Bubbler Reality Labs is what came out of it.
